A few years ago I had the pleasure of spending an entire week visiting our nation's capital, Washington D.C. We visited the well-known places like The Capitol, The White House and all the various monuments and many museums of interest. Although I was a tourist, I wanted to experience not just the tourists attractions but the off the beaten path attractions. I am speaking of the unknown places that should be rated with five stars but are not.
We arrived at 1213 U St, NW in DC to Ben's Chili Bowl (one of several locations) and the first thing that caught my attention of was the colorful patchwork bear statue sitting in front of the building. The bear sat there as if waiting for someone to bring it a jar of sweet honey. This establishment has been at the same address since its opening in 1958 by Ben & Virginia Ali. Upon entering the restaurant a little past eleven thirty in the morning the small diner like establishment was crowded with customers. The line to place my order had already wrapped around the dining tables to the left of the sit down counter. There were no seats available. All of the tables were taken including the ones in the rear dining area. Thankfully the friendly staff quickly came and cleared tables as soon as other guests had departed. Many famous people such as comics, politicians, sports figures and musicians have eaten at this bustling business. So I figured it was time for me to sample the food.
By the time my order arrived I was lucky enough to have gotten a seat as another vacationing family was leaving. The size of the meal was huge compared to the reasonable cost. I ordered of a Half Smoke, fries and a drink and my son' had a Chili Dog, fries and a soda. Not a big fan of chili because most are too spicy for me but this chili had a whole different attitude. At first bite of tasting the famous chili it was just so mouth-watering and delicious. This treat was different from anything I had ever tasted. It was not that spicy or overpowering but it had just the right amount of spices and ingredients to give a rich and flavorful taste. The half smoke by itself was whole different show. This huge sausage that had spent the right amount of time on the grill giving it a perfect backyard taste that had me wanting more with every bite I took. The french fries were crispy without being soggy after frying in oil. My son who is a very healthy eater got half way through his large meal and couldn't finish it. His sit down meal became take- out because it was too good to leave behind.
There are not many businesses that have survived the signs of change as the economy went on its roller coaster ride. However, this eatery has and still is thriving some 50 plus years later. I am almost certain their recipe for success is pure love on pleasing their customers' taste buds. I rate this fine establishment a perfect 5 stars for great food and service and for that I will patronize them again.
